The purpose of the article is to determine the reasons for the importance of competition for the development of one's own business, as well as its ability to influence the business environment of an enterprise. It has been established that "competition" turns out to be extremely ambiguous, and is also marked by a variety of approaches to its interpretation. It was found that today there is no universal, as well as a single definition of this term, as scientists have not yet reached a consensus on their understanding. The views of scientists on the interpretation of the content of the category "competition" were studied. It was noted that competition is a necessary element of the modern business environment. An analysis of the impact of competition on the business environment of enterprise development was carried out. As a result, it was established that competition can be a good source of growth and stimulation of development for the enterprise.
